How Serious Is A Ruptured Eardrum?

The eardrum separates the middle and outer ear. A ruptured eardrum is a hole, perforation, or other opening in the eardrum. It can be caused by ear infections, so it happens more often in children. Other common causes are sudden changes in air pressure, extremely loud noises close to the ear, ear injuries, and inserting cotton swabs too far into the ear canal. After an eardrum rupture you may feel pain, hear buzzing or other noises, experience hearing loss, have facial weakness, and see blood or fluid draining from the ear. Sometimes this condition can be managed at home after a doctor’s evaluation, but it can also require antibiotics (if caused by an infection) or a surgical repair.
