When Vertigo Comes With Hearing Loss

Vertigo is the sensation that you’re spinning, or that your surroundings are spinning, although you’re not moving. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) causes sudden, brief episodes of dizziness, often after changing head position. It’s one of the most common causes of vertigo, with episodes that usually last under a minute. BPPV doesn’t always have an obvious cause, but it often begins following a head injury. Although BPPV itself doesn’t cause hearing loss, it sometimes occurs with BPPV. When BPPV results from head trauma, the injury may also cause hearing loss. If you experience vertigo, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and hearing loss at the same time, it may be a sign of Meniere’s disease or a different ear disorder.
