Cholesteatoma is a benign growth that occurs behind the eardrum. It happens when dead skin cells collect and form a lump or cyst. It can be present at birth, but it is usually caused by recurring ear infections, a retracted eardrum, or a ruptured eardrum. Cholesteatomas can grow large enough to affect hearing and may become infected. Symptoms include ear pressure, dizziness, and recurring ear infections, which are common to many ear conditions. One distinct symptom of cholesteatoma is a smelly, pus-like discharge from the affected ear. Tinnitus and hearing loss can also occur. Retracted eardrum—an imbalance of air inside and outside the ear that pulls the eardrum toward the middle ear—is the most common cause of cholesteatoma.
