High-Frequency Hearing Loss

Sound travels in waves, and higher frequency sounds produce more waves and higher sounds. The frequency or rate of waves is measured in hertz (Hz). Humans are capable of hearing sounds ranging from 20 to 20,000 Hz. People with high-frequency hearing loss have problems hearing sounds between 2,000 and 8,000 Hz. High-frequency hearing loss is most common in adults over 50 because it’s a part of normal aging. High-frequency hearing loss is usually caused by exposure to extremely loud noises or long-term noise exposure to lower-level noises. This type of hearing loss most often affects a person’s ability to interpret speech, especially in a noisy room. Consonants also become more difficult to hear, and sounds may seem muffled or distorted.

  The first step toward better hearing is recognizing that a hearing problem exists. Having a hearing test is the second step.
