The lit candle is placed inside the ear canal to create a low-level vacuum that softens and removes earwax. While the practice has been used for years, there is evidence that it can do more harm than good. Ear candling has been shown to cause perforated eardrums, outer ear infections, and hearing loss. Earwax is actually beneficial to the ear and doesn’t need to be removed. Your ears have a self-cleaning system for removing wax, but if a blockage is causing muffled hearing or other issues, it should be removed by a doctor.
