Causes Of Otitis Media With Effusion

   Otitis media is the most common type of ear infection, occurring in the middle ear. Otitis media with effusion (OME) happens when fluid can’t drain from the middle ear, usually after a middle ear infection. Although the fluid associated with OME is not an infection, the increased pressure can be uncomfortable and may feel like there’s something stuck in the ear. In some cases, OME causes hearing problems in the affected ear. OME happens when the eustachian tubes become swollen or blocked, causing fluid build-up and increased pressure in the middle ear. The condition usually clears up on its own in four to six weeks but may require surgery if it persists for longer.
