What is the difference between profound hearing loss and deafness? In the medical community, deafness is determined by a hearing test of multiple frequencies. A person who cannot hear an average of frequencies over 90 decibels is considered deaf. But outside the medical community, deafness is often defined by how a person identifies oneself and relates to either the deaf community or the hearing community. People with severe hearing loss may consider themselves to be deaf, regardless of their medical diagnosis. People who are medically deaf may be in denial and not identify as a deaf person. For people with hearing loss, deafness can be defined by their perception of how well they fit into the deaf or hearing communities.
Some call deafness the silent epidemic. It is painless and invisible, and it is estimated that, at some point in their lives, more than 275 million people around the world suffer from it. The reasons vary and include medical conditions, noise pollution, aging, misusing personal musical devices, diet, and heredity. Men and women, young and old—no one is immune to the loss of this precious sense. Find out the state of your hearing.
P.S. Thanks to the technology of cochlear implants, many people with profound hearing loss can interact with others as a hearing person.
