What Is Usher Syndrome?

    Usher Syndrome is a rare genetic condition that affects vision, hearing, and balance. There are three types of Usher Syndrome. Type one causes deafness at birth, progressive vision loss starting around age ten, and balance problems. Type two causes moderate to severe hearing loss at birth and progressive vision loss starting in the teenage years. Type three is very rare and causes progressive hearing loss beginning in late childhood and progressive vision loss in adulthood. The disease occurs in varying degrees, so some patients only experience moderate hearing and vision loss, while others become deaf and blind. There is no cure, but patients can improve symptoms with corrective lenses, hearing aids, and cochlear implants.
