What Is Swimmer's Ear?

Swimmer’s ear is a type of outer ear infection that occurs when water gets trapped in your ear, creating a moist environment that supports bacterial growth. In addition to swimming and bathing, swimmer’s ear can be caused by putting objects like cotton swabs in your ear, which can break the thin layer of skin lining the ear canal. Swimmer’s ear is classified into three stages of progression, depending on the severity of the infection: mild, moderate, or severe. Symptoms of a mild infection include itchiness in the ear, discomfort, and clear fluid drainage. It can be treated easily with medicated ear drops in the mild stage, but it may progress to the moderate or severe levels if left untreated.
