What Causes Common Ear Infections

  Otitis media is the medical term for a middle ear infection. It is the second most common emergency room diagnosis in children. Although the condition can occur at any age, it most often develops in children 6 to 24 months old. Otitis media is often caused by an allergy, cold, sore throat, or other respiratory condition that produces swelling and blockage in the eustachian tubes, which connect the middle ear and throat. When the eustachian tubes don’t allow proper fluid drainage from the middle ear, bacteria become trapped and can grow into an infection. A family history of ear infections puts children at a higher risk for contracting otitis media, as does second-hand smoke, daycare attendance, and improper bottle feeding.
