The Function of Eustachian Tubes

The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the nasal-sinus cavity and performs three main functions: balancing pressure in the inner ear, draining fluid from the middle ear, and protecting the ear from nasal drainage and other internal bodily sounds. The tube has a valve that opens and closes to drain fluid. When the valve doesn’t open and close properly, fluid can build up in the middle ear, leading to pressure, pain, unusual bodily sounds, and hearing your own voice too loudly. Common Eustachian tube disorders include patulous Eustachian tube dysfunction (the valve remains open), obstructive Eustachian tube dysfunction (the value does not open properly), and baro-challenge-induced Eustachian tube dysfunction (obstructive Eustachian tube dysfunction when on airplanes or SCUBA diving).
