Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) most often occurs over time through exposure to a variety of types of noises. But sudden loud noises—like gunshots, fireworks, and explosions—can also damage hearing, sometimes permanently if we are too close to the sound’s source. Children, teens, and adults of all ages can experience NIHL from a sudden noise. Loud sounds damage the cells and membranes in the cochlea. Sudden bursts of extremely loud sounds can damage the bones in the middle ear (which vibrate to create sound) or rupture the eardrum (which delivers the vibrations to the middle ear). Exposure to sudden loud noises can cause sudden hearing loss, which often resolves itself within a few days but may have long-term implications.

 The most important step you can take to protect your hearing is to make smart choices, such as not subjecting your hearing to sounds too loud to tolerate and carrying ear protection to wear in  loud, noisy environments.
