     Autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED) is a rare but serious condition that causes hearing loss. It happens when the immune system attacks normal cells in the inner ear that are mistaken as harmful bacteria or a virus. Sudden hearing loss in one ear that rapidly progresses to the other ear over the course of days, weeks, or months is the most significant symptom of AIED. Vertigo, tinnitus (hearing ringing, roaring, or hissing noises), and a feeling of fullness in one or both ears are other common symptoms. Most patients respond well to treatment with steroids, prednisone, or chemotherapy drugs. Many patients benefit from hearing aids during treatment. Cochlear implants may improve hearing in patients unresponsive to medication therapy.
