Ruptured Eardrum Causes and Complications

  A burst or ruptured eardrum—also called a perforated eardrum or tympanic membrane perforation—is a hole or tear in the tissue that separates the ear canal from the middle ear. The eardrum vibrates in response to sound and starts the process of translating sound waves into nerve impulses. It also acts as a barrier to protect the eardrum from water, bacteria, and foreign objects. Common causes include ear infections, very loud noises, severe head trauma, sudden changes in air pressure, and putting foreign objects in the ear canal. A ruptured eardrum may repair itself within a few weeks, but sometimes surgery is necessary. If left untreated, it can lead to chronic ear infections, middle ear cysts, and hearing loss.
