 Labyrinthitis is an infection in the ear’s labyrinth, the balance center of the brain. This type of infection affects the messages that the ear sends to the brain and may cause hearing and balance problems. Labyrinthitis is most often caused by a virus like a cold or flu, but it can also be caused by a herpes group virus. Sometimes it is caused by a bacterial infection that spreads to the labyrinth. The most common symptom is vertigo, which may cause dizziness and a feeling that the room is spinning or moving. Labyrinthitis may clear up on its own, but if it lasts longer than a few days it should be diagnosed to rule out other diseases.
