Since healthy hearing is essential for development, a baby’s hearing is tested as a newborn while still at the hospital. Two types of tests are available. The ABR (auditory brainstem response) method tests the baby’s hearing nerves and their connection to the brain. Three electrodes are placed on the baby’s head, and nerve responses are recorded as different sounds are played through headphones. The OAE (otoacoustic emissions) method tests echoes within the baby’s ear, using small probes that are placed inside the ear to play different sounds and record each ear’s echo response. Both tests are quick, painless, and many newborns sleep through them.
