   A traumatic brain injury (TBI), also called a concussion or head injury, can dislodge or damage the tiny bones of the inner ear, which vibrate to create sound. A TBI can also rupture the eardrum, affect parts of the brain responsible for processing sound, and disrupt the vestibular system (responsible for balance). In addition to hearing loss, a head injury can cause tinnitus (a ringing or buzzing noise in the ears), extreme sensitivity to sound, and problems with balance and spatial orientation. Fortunately, many cases of hearing loss and other TBI-related issues resolve on their own within a few months as the brain heals. Dislodged or broken bones in the inner ear may require surgical correction.
