Ear Barotrauma

Also called airplane ear or otic barotrauma, ear barotrauma occurs when a sudden change in air pressure causes an ear injury. Barotrauma is caused by a blockage in the ear’s eustachian tubes—from either air pressure or inflammation—and is common with air travel. The eustachian tubes run from the back of the middle ear to the back of the throat, balancing air pressure on both sides of the eardrum by allowing outside air into the middle ear. When air can’t get to the middle ear, pressure builds up behind the eardrum and creates unbalanced air pressure in the middle ear, sometimes causing discomfort and pain. In rare cases, this can damage the eardrum by bruising or even rupturing it.
