Cochlear implants are small, electronic devices with an external part that sits behind the ear and an internal part that is surgically placed under the skin. They work a bit differently than hearing aids (which amplify sound) because cochlear implants allow sound to bypass the damaged parts of the ear to directly stimulate the auditory nerve (which sends electrical impulses to the brain to be translated into sounds). It is different from normal hearing and can take some adjustment but allows a person to hear things like warning signals, environmental noises, and some speech.
