     In 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed to protect the rights of people with disabilities, including people living with hearing loss. Among other things, the act requires public government entities to provide accessibility to assistive listening systems (ALS) in government buildings. It also requires public spaces and privately-owned places of public accommodation to improve accessibility to assistive listening systems. The ADA additionally addresses hearing access during airline travel and at places like movie theaters, museums, hospitals, concert halls, stadiums, and courtrooms. A hearing loop is an example of a common ALS in the public sphere. It uses hearing aid telecoil technology to connect to the loop, allowing broadcasted sounds to be sent directly through hearing aids.
