     Ear infections occur in the middle ear, the space behind the eardrum that holds tiny, vibrating bones. An ear infection is caused by a virus or bacteria in the middle ear. It is often the result of an illness that causes swelling in the upper respiratory system, like a cold, flu, or allergy. The eustachian tubes connect each middle ear to the back of the throat, behind the nasal passages. When eustachian tubes swell they can become blocked, causing fluid to build up in the middle ear. If the fluid becomes infected, the symptoms of an ear infection appear, including hearing problems, ear pain, and fluid draining from the ear. Fever, headaches, and loss of balance can also occur.
