Stomach acid can travel from the throat to the inner ear through the eustachian tube to create painful inflammation in the area. This occurs due to an enzyme called pepsin that breaks down proteins in the stomach.  It does not stop digesting even when it reaches and enters the inner ear. If the damage to the inner ear is severe enough it can cause pain as well as hearing loss. The condition is often  treated with medication and changes in diet.
