Sound Intensity

Excessive noise exposure is the most common cause of hearing loss. Intensity of sound is measured in “decibels” (dBs) on a scale that ranges from the faintest sound that the human ear can detect (0 dB) to the noise created by a rocket launch (180 dB). Because the decibel scale is a logarithmic scale, which goes up in powers of ten, every increase of 10dB on the scale is equivalent to a 10-fold increase in sound intensity, which generally translates into a doubling in loudness. That means that a sound of 20dB is 10 times more intense than a sound of 10dB. So, an increase from 85 dB (heavy traffic) to 95 dB (motorcycle) may be more intense than you realize.
